The Heck with the Snow….

I’m putting on bronzer, drinking tequila and dreaming of Mexico… and I know the perfect place to do it.

It has become a tradition of mine to spend snowy evenings at Milagro’s Cafe in Stonington. Not only is it walking distance from my home (I never said I was dressing for the beach), but the cozy interior and glow of the restaurant is as warming as the tequila and good company.

m3The food is more traditional Mexican than Tex-Mex, but don’t be intimidated, there is something for everyone. My personal go-to is the Baja fish tacos topped with crispy Habanero slaw, although I prefer them seared not fried. When they have it, their beet salad is to die for (yes, delicious, root of the earth, purple beets… I just can’t get enough). They have a wide selection of sipping tequilas, fresh margaritas and Mexican beers. Owner Martin Zavala, originally from Mexico City, brings the perfect blend of authenticity and accessibility to both the food and the atmosphere.

There are few tables with even less room at the bar, and reservations are not generally accepted. Be prepared to wait on busier nights, but trust me, it’s worth it. You can visit Milagro Cafe at 142 Water Street in the Stonington Boro. Preview the menu and get more information on their website here.

Cheers to authentic Mexican family recipes (and tequila),
