What a treat it was when owners Suzanne and Stephen of Capizzano Olive Oils & Vinegars reached out to Saltwater Farm Vineyard with an interesting proposition: pairing their premium infused olive oils and vinegars with our wine. Now we’ve all heard of pairing chocolate, oysters or steak with wine, but just the oil and vinegar…this was a happy first for me.
The first time I tried their oil Suzanne brought us two of her stand outs: Baklouti Green Chile Pepper fused olive oil and White Truffle oil. After a little experimenting we agreed that the spiciness of the green chile oil was best complimented by our zesty 2014 Sauvignon Blanc and the decadent white truffle oil was best paired with a richer red wine like our 2012 Cabernet Franc / Merlot blend.
The second occasion was at their place in downtown Pawcatuck. Well worth the short drive from Saltwater Farm, their shop is arrayed with dozens of stainless steel vats filled with oil and vinegar for sampling, reminiscent of our stainless steel tanks used to age our white wines.
In addition to their full size offerings, they do mini bottles with personalized labels perfect for a shower or wedding favor.
Equally impressive as their olive oils and vinegars is their knowledge and enthusiasm. Suzanne’s background as a rehabilitation therapist coupled with Stephen’s Italian heritage and formal education in all things EVOO & V have lead them to focus on the “Mediterranean Lifestyle” of healthy and happy living. Stephen’s suggestion: mixing blood orange infused oil with a dark chocolate balsamic vinegar, perfect when poured over sponge cake for dessert.
Check them out for yourself; their store front at 5 Coggswell Street in downtown Pawcatuck (next to Bess Eaton) is open every day except Wednesday. If you’re really lucky you may even snag one of the last remaining tickets for their “Wine & Olive Oil Tasting” featuring Saltwater Farm Vineyard wine being held Tuesday, July 14, 2015, 6:30pm to 8:00pm ($15, advanced ticketing required – this event will sell out). And as an extra special treat, past Saltwater Farm Vineyard bride and writer of Smashed Garlic food blog, Kristen, will be on hand for the event to share her insights.
Cheers to Suzanne and Stephan,
