I am so excited to let you all in on a little known secret! There is a hidden gem on our shoreline and it’s called The Side Door. You’ll find it attached to the Old Lyme Inn, just a short ride down I-95. Finally, a jazz venue in Southeast Connecticut!

My husband has always loved jazz, but I’m relatively new to the scene. Two years ago, I took him to the city to celebrate his thirtieth for a show at a famous venue known as the Village Vanguard. I fell hard for this music, it gets in your blood and washes over you in waves. It wasn’t until I experienced it first hand that I understood the attraction. There is something intoxicating about it all: a dimly lit club, intimate seating, a good glass of wine or cocktail, and the soulful sounds of raw emotion – soft or intense, upbeat or romantically low. Some musicians put on a show while others get lost in their craft and you are simply lucky to be among their talent and expression. Either way, prepare for a palpable expression of musicality.

The Side Door is the love child of Ken Kitchings. Though he’s the owner, you’ll find him greeting you at the door, introducing the band, bouncing around the room taking photos and shaking your hand with an enthusiastic ‘thank you for coming!’ He’s the kind of guy who emotes through vocal “hey’s!”, metronome-esque finger-snapping, and the playful energy of a fanatic in the presence of his or her musical idol. The idol, in Kitchings’ case, is the art of jazz music. Treat yourself to a night out, celebrate something special, or simply escape the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

You can check out the upcoming bands and purchase tickets on their website. The doors open at 7:30 PM for cocktails and small bites (I highly recommend the tuna tartare), so get there early and find just the right seat.

We are thrilled to be hosting Kitchings’ nephew and his sweet bride-to-be at Saltwater Farm Vineyard for their summer 2015 wedding.

The energy of this club is catching on and it won’t be secret for long with a recent writeup in the Times! Enjoy a few teasers from the show below…

Cheers from the Roberts!

We thank the Lee Elci Show on 94.9 News Now for featuring Rick Koster on the Wizards of Weekend segment Thursday mornings for the recommendation.
